Working with cloth is an ancient way to transform the ordinary into something sacred.

Decorative fabrics, such as memorial quilts and altar cloths, have been used in many traditions to honor loss and provide comfort for the grieving. These textiles are meant to be held, touched and used often in the home. They are meant to be with us, the way that our histories of loss are always with us. I have found deep joy and rootedness through fabric work. It allows me to connect to my ancestors, my memories and my intentions on a daily basis.

Grief isn’t something that needs to be fixed.

It is evidence of having loved. It is the continuation of that loving.

We deserve to be held and witnessed in all of grief’s messy forms. Quilts and cloths can travel alongside us on those journeys, as tangible reminders of the beautiful complexity of our lives. They can reflect the truth of what we are grieving back to us, and help us honor what is sacred within it.

Creating ritual fabrics for someone is an act of companioning and witnessing them. It is something I am deeply moved to be trusted with, and something I approach with respect, collaboration and care.

What does this process look like?

Before work on any project begins, we sit in ritual space together and identify what is needed. We uncover the symbols, colors and fabric that hold meaning for this . Past quilts have incorporated scraps of a loved one’s clothing , embroidered drawings and/or words, and have greatly varied in size— from a king sized bedsheet, to a set of small cloth coasters. Each commission is specific and personal and can be adapted to fit many spaces and financial needs.
